In a complete turnaround from my normal "over a year to read a book" state of being, a mere three weeks after finnishing Hidden Empire, the first book in Kevin J. Andersons mammoth space opera. Whilst devoid of any legitimate science ( its s space opera after all ) it's the story and characters that drive this book forward.

Once again the saga of the Hydrogue war pulls you along with political puppetry, and the blatant stupidity of human goverments. Various reviews complain of the stupidity of the Human goverment, that it's ludicrous to think Earth forces would be so naive to think the continued Hydrogue attacks are "unprovoked", but you only need to look at America and there blindness to the fact that terrorist attacks against the US are caused (in part), not with unprovoked madness, but with a defiant retaliation against initial actions of the American goverment itself.

However, as the Hydrogue war hits explosive heights at the culmination of the book, the world Kevin paints has grown to an emense size that engulfs the small planet called Earth; the story has grown into what seems an untamed wild beast, and as I start on book 3, with book due in a few months, I hope the story doesn't suffer for it...
