Christmas (boxes) come early
Christmas boxes will again be coming early to a lot of people this year (and I'm not meaning the glossy Leopard OS/X box) - I'm talking free food hampers delivered to thousands of homes and families:
Christmas Box delivers "Christmas in a Box" to people and families in need at Christmas time. The festive season can be a difficult time, both financially and emotionally, for many people. Its the heart of the Christmas Box project to deliver a blessing to those people through a gift which provides a meal to share with others.
Christmas Box has been running for 7 years and delivered over 12,000 hampers. Its all made possible by generous people. Christmas Box is organized by The Life Centre Trust and is delivered through community groups.
Traditionally members of Auckland's Christian Life Centre church (now known as Life) donated individual boxes of food (purchased from retail supermarkets costing around $100 a box) and boxed up over a (long long long) weekend by volunteers, but this year the project is aiming for a much larger reach and going wholesale - buying food in bulk and packed at source (bringing the total cost of each box down to around $50) with church members (and non members) doing fund raising events and direct financial donations.
As part of our own fund raising event we had a large combined garage sale/sausage sizzle/bake sale bringing in around $800 - or 16 food hampers which will help bless some families Christmas this year, and with a church of over 4000 people the target of 5000 hampers should easily be met.
Feel like donating?
