InternetNZ 2005 Election Survery Results

posted Tuesday, 13 September 2005
Via David Farrar I see that the political party responses to the InternetNZ 2005 Election Survey is now online:

The Labour Party on Format Shifting:
11. What is your party’s view about amending the Copyright Act to allow format shifting of copyrighted works for personal use?

Note – currently it is a breach of copyright to shift the format of copyrighted material – for example, making an MP3 copy of a song from a CD you have purchased and putting it on your MP3 player.

A Labour-led government would introduce legislation to create an exception to allow the legitimate owner of a sound recording to make only one copy in any given format for his or her own private and domestic use.

So, under Labour my iTunes and associated iPod MP3 library is illegal. Doh.

The Maori Party on everything:
The Maori Party gave the following response:
Tena koe Jordan

Thank you for your invitation for the Maori Party to inform members of InternetNZ of relevant policies, and to have these policies published on your website. Unfortunately our small office has been absolutely overwhelmed with similar such requests and we are simply unable to respond. Our sincere apologies for this. We did, however, find your questionnaire both insightful and instructive for further policy development in this area. Kia ora mai ra.

Uh oh - they're too busy to talk to us..... I hate to see them try run an entire country then...

The National Party on Spam:
1. Does your party support legislation to prohibit the sending of spam?

Yes – but not the legislation currently proposed by Labour
Well, sure ok Don. I get that you don't support Labours anti-spam legislation, how about telling us something about what you DO support then?

Along the same lines of "not what Labour do", National's policy response on format shifting is somewhat amusing:
11. What is your party’s view about amending the Copyright Act to allow format shifting of copyrighted works for personal use?

Note – currently it is a breach of copyright to shift the format of copyrighted material – for example, making an MP3 copy of a song from a CD you have purchased and putting it on your MP3 player.

No formal party position – but I copy stuff all the time between PC, CD and iPod and think that should be perfectly legal.

Excuse me RIANZ, I realize that you no longer advertise and promote your "Burn and Get Burnt" campaign, but surely the laws still apply? Whilst I don't like the (or lack of) format shifting laws, can we please do something about high-profile political figures "flaunting the law"? Now I know what I can do with all the money I'll get back with Nationals tax cuts - pay off all manner of RIANZ fines...
