Mark Derricutt's Disturbing Thoughts

Jinspired JDBInsight

posted Friday, 7 May 2004
Just got JDBInsight working: "holy shit, dayam, thats a neat shiny piece of thing." Had a problem lurking somewhere in the system with a bunch of queries that was taking forever in a day to run, untimately causes problems for other users of the system, after about an hour reading the docs and getting JDBInsight configured and running inside resin, and a few minutes learning how to navigate the ( friendly, but rather complex user interface ) I found the query in question, 29 seconds, saw the SQL - totally heinous and evil, and was also told exactly which class and method made the call. I do believe I'll be making a purchase order come Monday morning.

Hi,

It is always hard trying to cater for power users and relatively new users. I have tried to simplify the products UI without sacrificing the power of the visualizations and the depth of insight. Sometimes I get it right and other times I could have done better. I believe (hope) that you will come to appreciate the many different views and perspectives on profiling. The product tries to cater for all different kinds of bottlenecks thus it does not present some kind of dash board that say's here is the problem because in general performance engineering is not always so easy and relies heavily on the experience and skill set of the user to understand the complex interaction between internal and external system components.

For the next release (2.2) the focus is on time line analysis with some really nice views inspired by the matrix. Cool views but at the same time very effective. Lets wait and see.

Thanks for the nice and short review.
