Weekend roundup...

posted Sunday, 10 October 2004
  • Finnished Crytonomicon by Neal Stephenson on Friday morning; excellent book - long, deep, complex, engrosing, a damn good read. At times I thought "this would make an excellent movie", but then I kept coming back to "expect they'd murder it!".
  • Started reading Salt by Adam Roberts, so far so good...
  • On and off rain kept me away from a bike ride on both Saturday and Sunday, ok so I'm a wimp and don't particular like the idea of cycling in the rain.
  • Was about to start some coding on the JIRA plugin when Wal and Jan came over and kidnapped me for a few games of pool on Saturday night, only to get evil stares and glares from the somewhat well-endowed chick at the next table who didn't appreciate a bar-full of guys catching the occasional glance ( I guess Wal making a few air-born balls almost hit her a few times didn't help either ) - all fun thou...
  • Watched Garfield - The Movie on Sunday morning, the problem with these kid orientated movies is they have er, kids in them; and I unfortunately was surrounded by 5 year olds, including one who seemed to fall asleep, slide out of her chair next to me, and sleep on my leg - ug. Fun film none the less.
  • Picked up the new limited edition Exorcist box set including all 3 Exorcist films. The box is #1940 of a #5000 limited run. I love the cross motif on the box packaging as well. I wasn't really in the mood to watch them tonight so hopefully I'll get to them sometime in the week.
  • Made it along to church tonight for the first time in awhile, was a baptism service - I've never been one for the "you must be (water) baptized" in order to be saved. The Family Life forum seems to have an interesting thread on the subject, which one particularly interesting comment from "kathyc":
Not all churches practice baptism by immersion. Rom 10:9-10 states "that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you shall be saved; for with the heart man believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation." There is no mention of baptism here.

Eph 2:8-9 states, "For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God: not as a result of works, that no one should boast."

I'm not discounting works...I believe faith without works is dead, and the first thing a believer should do is get baptised. But if they don't, it doesn't mean they aren't saved. If that were the case then you are saying that the death of Jesus on the cross was not enough. The full atonement for our sins was not on the cross. Quite the contrary....the CROSS finished it, we are completely redeemed by the death, blood and ressurection of Jesus on the cross. Nothing more is needed. It is finished on the cross.

I think that basically sums up my position as well.
  • Seeing as I missed this morning's church service, I thought I'd pick up the tape of the message, and found they're now selling CD's of the service as well - great - this'll make it easier for me to MP3 it and listen to it at work - then I found out the cost - they're selling these blank-cdr copies of the message for $10 a pop. I grabbed it anyway as I wanted to hear the message, I'll update with a URL once I've put it up - why? I've been thinking about this whole podcasting thing that's starting to become popular. The times I've missed church and wanted to hear the message, but had no way to get the tape ( or now CD ) - it would be awesome to just look at my podcast inbox or RSS feed and see I've got 3 unheared sermons. So that's what I'm thinking of doing, be it with the church, or independant ( with would mean I wouldn't need to shell out $10 a message.... ). I don't see how they can charge $10 - if my minidisc recorder wasn't busted I'd just start bootlegging the sermon, but that would defeat the purpose, as I want these for when I can't make it... sigh
