Mark Derricutt's Disturbing Thoughts

Used Cigarette butt for sale...

posted Monday, 11 April 2005
It's not just ebay that gets to have the odd auctions, up on Trade Me, New Zealand's own auction site is a used cigarette butt:
Priceless Kiwiana collector’s item…. The butt of the last cigarette officially and legally smoked inside Malt Restaurant and Bar in Auckland, 11.59pm on December 9, 2004 before the smoke-free legislation came into force seconds later. Comes complete with an official certificate of authenticity signed by the bar owners who witnessed the event.

Handled with the utmost care and attention throughout the commemorative function, this cigarette butt has been specially encased and framed in a trophy-like perspex display, then mounted on a purpose-built block of fine native New Zealand wood, which has an engraved commemorative plaque with the official details of this historic event.

This is the only cigarette butt of its kind in existence anywhere in the world to commemorate the official end of smoking inside bars and restaurants and New Zealand on December 9, 2004. Priceless.

What a magnificent addition to a Kiwiana museum or private collection of New Zealand memorabilia. Te Papa perhaps? Or maybe one of the major cigarette companies? This is the only cigarette butt of its kind in New Zealand, and indeed the world… and is therefore priceless.
