Fedora Core 4test3: No Match for argument: pan

posted Tuesday, 17 May 2005
Installed Fedora Core 4 test 3 on the weekend and am deeply saddened to see that pan has been removed, and doesn't seem to be in the new extras repository either. I guess the decesion was based upon the fact that both Evolution and Thunderbird ( included ) support NNTP. However, this hardly makes them anywhere near the calibre of pan, especially when it comes to downloading/decoded multipart archives from binary groups.

However, google tells me that I can replace my yum.conf to add all the extra repositories we've come to know and love and then install it.

Here's my first beef with this plan - yum was updated to include a /etc/yum.repos.d/ directory to add new repositories, without having to modify /etc/yum.conf, and here we are, out of the box being told to just ignore that, just seems a bit stupid (ok, so the FAQ entry was probably originally written before yum had that option, but still).

So, whilst Evolution supports NNTP, I'm still of the opinion its one of the worst applications currently in the linux desktop - functionally, and asthetically. At least Thunderbird gets it mostly right.
