Mark Derricutt's Disturbing Thoughts

IRC "Help Channels" as an interview challenge...

posted Thursday, 2 February 2006
After another evening of incessant newbies clammering for help in various #java channels, an idea struck me.

Instead of asking simple coding questions or setting coding tests during an interview; why not sit them infront of an IRC session and force them to help newbies.

After a variable amount of time, bring the applicant back into the interview room and go through the IRC logs with them:
  • Did the help they offer actually help?
  • Was it the right help?
  • How did they handle repetive simple questions?
  • Did they curse?
  • Did grey hairs magically grow?
  • Did they slap the newbs around shouting "G O O G L E it dumb f**k"?
The results may, or may not be usefull for any sensible manner of metric - but it might be fun ;)

So what would be your disposition if they had a number of "Did they slap the newbs around shouting "G O O G L E it dumb f**k"?" because for some people, a smack-down is entrely appropriate! (Oh yeah, it's a good idea too, real-world problems for people, too)

Hey can you tell me how I insert a picture here? Someone told me to use 'tags' but I don't know what that means.
