Mark Derricutt's Disturbing Thoughts

Deicide - At The Studio

posted Saturday, 16 December 2006

Deicide are one of those bands I've been aware of for years, but never really got into - the music was ok (from what I've heard of the latest album the music is even better with Jack Owen and Ralph Santolla) but the lyrics were a major blocking point for me, part of that was the whole "I'm a christian" and Glen Benton wants to kill me side of things, but for the most part it was due to the stupidity of his lyrics (at least of those songs I heard).

I was interested in reading xhile's commentary on the gig which made it sound quite good:

I've just come home from the Deicide concert. It was good. Incomprehensible, but good. They created a wall of sound with deep grunting and screaming; I got thoroughly satiated with loud crunchy music. Bandmeister Glen Benton was mostly amiable, as were the rest of the band, smiling and interacting with the crowd. In fact, Benton looked a lot like Billy Connelly, which made it hard for me to take him seriously.

However, I then read a review of the gig from Chris Rigby via the Metal New Zealand mailing list which paints an entirely different description:

Review: DEICIDE
At the Studio, Auckland, New Zealand.
Friday 15 December 2006.

First up, huge amounts of respect to Gareth Craze for the excellent job in the promotion and production of the first ever New Zealand tour of who up until tonight I perceived as being a legendary band within the extreme Metal genre.

Without rambling about minor details like the bands performance or the quality of the show, let’s cut straight to the point: Glen Benton needs to learn to respect the hospitality that is offered to him by his fans.... I was not impressed by his on stage abuse of the sound person (Daryl Tapsell, a talented local engineer) in front of the crowd for a minor hick up with the monitors, or his booting of stage divers like they were pieces of trash. Even at the end of the set when he was shaking fans hands in the front row, I saw him put the boot into someone.

If someone came into my house and acting this way I’d stamp on their fucking head! I’m sure I’m not alone in saying that I’m highly disappointed at the behavior of one member of this band who has been welcomed into our country by fans with open arms. Other international Extreme metal bands who have visited these shores have responded in kind to the appreciation that has been offered to them.

In my own words: Glenn Benton, You are not welcome back in New Zealand!

I apologise to the other members of Deicide who may feel they have been Targeted by this review; this has not been my intent.

Hey Talios, good to see ya on Friday. Yeah, Chris Rigby's comments above are fair. My "review" such as it was, was very short. I'm planning to write a longer one shortly. Interestingly, I was standing beside Darryl (sound engineer) for most of the show and chatted to him about some of the abuse from the stage. Darryl was professional and friendly.
