Worst half second ever

posted Monday, 18 July 2005
My parents were up in Auckland prior to flying out to England for a holiday, so I took them over to my brother and his wife's new house for dinner.  The meal was an tasty home cooked roast, the fireplace was blazing with a warm fire, the rain outside lightly  and the icecream and berry desert was lovely...

As we returned to the motel, I had the worst 1/2 second of my life, and whilst mum didn't say much - I'm sure it was even worse for her.

The drive way approaching the front glass doors of the motel were wet, and somewhat slippery, the very worn welcome map recessed about an inch in the floor, with about 1/2 an inch gap before it even started.  Now, if you're thinking ahead you'll might guess whats coming up - a slippery surface mixed with the floor suddenly being "not quite where it should" unfortunately leads to a distinct lack in balance, oh - and did I mention the large glass doors directly infront of us?

Moments later my mothers head bashes hard against the glass (which thankfully did NOT break, as we'd be in a much worse situation) leaving her curled up on the floor.  Whilst myself, my father, and the security guard scrambled to lift her up and make sure shes ok, the duty manager of the Airport Gateway Motel just say by and watched without a care in the world.

When I enquired if he had a first aid kit and suggested getting someone to look at the slippery entrance way he just rolled his eyes saying "oh, I guess I'll get someone to look at it..." - no sign of concern at the well being and safety of a customer.

Thankfully there was harm beyond a few grazes and some harsh looking bruises, but I left that motel with a distinct feeling of disgust at the night managers (lack of) behaviour.  Hopefully it doesn't hamper my parents holiday abroad at all...
